Testing pcb milling capabilities on my home made cnc machine. It is milling a smd arduino board that I designed with Eagle CAD.

Co-founder of Makerbot, Bre Pettis purchases milling machine company Other Machine

Former CEO and co-founder of 3D printing business Makerbot, Bre Pettis has purchased a non 3D printing relevant company – the CNC milling machine firm Other Machine.

Californian firm, Other Machine operates from Berkeley and is the designer of the Othermill Pro desktop milling machine. Bre Pettis at this point acts as CEO and founding father of Bre & Co, founded in the year 2016, the firm creates tailor-made 3D printed gifts and heirlooms.

Othermill Pro

Other Machine released its Othermill product line on Kickstarter with the original machine getting in excess of $311,000 back in 2013. The latest machine, the Othermill Pro, at this point is sold for $3,199.

With the aid of its 3-axis toolhead, the machine can mill PWBs and carve 3D shapes. The chief characteristic of the system is being able to be incorporated in an office setup. The Othermill Pro is sufficiently small enough to fit on a workdesk, silent enough to feature in a communal workplace and can help you speed up production processes by creating in-house instead of contracting out.

Coupled with hardware machines, the Berkeley company also has created its own Otherplan software for the CNC machines. Bre Pettis states he is “thrilled” to buy Other Machine as,

The Othermill Pro is an beautiful milling machine that is so precise that electrical engineers can easily mill PWBs with 6 mil traces and develop PWBs more quickly than a PWB service. I’m delighted to be back in the arena supporting innovators.

PWBs and electronic products

CEO of Other Machine, Dr. Danielle Applestone describes, “I look ahead to building on our commitment of accessible prototyping machines for specialist engineers and empowering numerous of students who use the Othermill Pro to learn and make their ideas a fact.”

Applestone also pointed out she is going to go on in her role as CEO and is “excited to get Bre’s assistance.”
