Meet Othermill, a Desktop CNC Milling Machine

We visit the headquarters of the Other Machine Company, the makers of a portable desktop CNC milling machine. Funded through Kickstarter, Othermill can be used to milling circuit boards, making molds, and engraving a variety of materials. We learn about how it works and why it’s like a counterpart to 3D printers.

Co-founder of Makerbot, Bre Pettis purchases milling machine firm Other Machine

Ex-CEO and co-founder of 3D printing firm Makerbot, Bre Pettis has bought a non 3D printing associated company – the CNC milling system company Other Machine.

American company, Other Machine operates from Berkeley and is the developer of the Othermill Pro desktop milling system. Bre Pettis right now works as CEO and founding father of Bre & Co, set up in the year 2016, the company creates custom 3D printed gifts and heirlooms.

Othermill Pro

Other Machine presented its Othermill product line on Kickstarter with the original machine getting over $311,000 back in 2013. The most recent system, the Othermill Pro, currently is sold for $3,199.

By using its 3-axis toolhead, the machine has the capability to mill Printed Circuits and carve 3D shapes. The main feature of the device is its capability to be incorporated in an office setup. The Othermill Pro is sufficiently little to fit on a desktop, soundless enough to feature in a social workplace and can hasten production processes by creating in-house in lieu of contracting out.

As well as hardware devices, the Berkeley firm has additionally created its own Otherplan software for the CNC machines. Bre Pettis says he is “thrilled” to purchase Other Machine as,

The Othermill Pro is definitely an beautiful milling machine which is so exact that electrical engineers can mill Printed Circuits with 6 mil traces and create Printed Circuits faster than a Printed Circuit service. I’m fired up to return in the arena assisting innovators.

CEO of Other Machine, Dr. Danielle Applestone points out, “I sit up for building on our commitment of accessible prototyping machines for specialist engineers and empowering countless of students who use the Othermill Pro to learn and make their concepts a real possibility.”
