Milling a PCB – Sherline Mill, Dremel tool, 0.2mm engraving cutter

Trying out the new PCB prototyping setup.
I’m using a Dremel mounted on a Sherline desktop mill I retrofitted for CNC operation. The tool is a 0.2mm, 40-degree engraving cutter. Depth is about 0.08mm. EMC2/Axis is running the show.
The results here were really pleasing. The cuts were quite clean and the drill holes came out perfectly centered. Not bad for an old Dremel lashed onto the machine.

Sorry for the less-than-stellar image quality. I accidentally left the camera set on 480p, and the downsampling it does is pretty ugly.

Milling a PCB from within Altium Designer

Altium Designer includes some pretty sophisticated scripting capabilities so I had a go at writing a script to generate RML (Roland Milling Language) commands from an Altium Designer PCB so I I can mill out prototype PCBs using a low-cost milling machine. This is great for schools and Universities too since you don’t need to muck around with messy etching chemicals.
You can find the script in a standard install of Altium Designer (Summer 08+) in the following folder: ExamplesScriptsDelphiscript ScriptsPcbMill Exporter or download it from the ‘Projects’ section of my home page: http://wiki.altium.com/display/ADOH/Dr+Marty+Hauff
