Trying out the new PCB prototyping setup.
I’m using a Dremel mounted on a Sherline desktop mill I retrofitted for CNC operation. The tool is a 0.2mm, 40-degree engraving cutter. Depth is about 0.08mm. EMC2/Axis is running the show.
The results here were really pleasing. The cuts were quite clean and the drill holes came out perfectly centered. Not bad for an old Dremel lashed onto the machine.

Sorry for the less-than-stellar image quality. I accidentally left the camera set on 480p, and the downsampling it does is pretty ugly.

Co-founder of Makerbot, Bre Pettis acquires milling machine firm Other Machine

Ex-CEO and co-founder of 3D printing business Makerbot, Bre Pettis has acquired a non 3D printing related firm – the CNC milling device company Other Machine.

Californian company, Other Machine operates from Berkeley and is the creator of the Othermill Pro desktop milling device. Bre Pettis currently acts as CEO and founder of Bre & Co, started in the year 2016, the company creates personalized 3D printed gifts and heirlooms.

Othermill Pro

Other Machine released its Othermill products on Kickstarter with the original machine raising above $311,000 back in 2013. The newest device, the Othermill Pro, at this time is sold for $3,199.

Employing its 3-axis toolhead, the machine has the capability to mill Printed Wiring Boards and carve 3D shapes. The key selling feature of the system is its ability to be incorporated in an office setup. The Othermill Pro is sufficiently little to fit on a worktable, peaceful enough to feature in a communal working environment and can hasten production processes by creating in-house as opposed to outsourcing.

Aside from hardware devices, the Berkeley firm has additionally introduced its own Otherplan software for the CNC machines. Bre Pettis declares he is “thrilled” to invest in Other Machine as,

The Othermill Pro is an mind-blowing milling machine that’s so exact that electrical engineers can easily mill Printed Wiring Boards with 6 mil traces and build Printed Wiring Boards faster than a Printed Wiring Board service. I’m delighted to return in the arena helping innovators.

Printed Wiring Boards and electronics

CEO of Other Machine, Dr. Danielle Applestone explains, “I look forward to building on our commitment of accessible prototyping machines for professional engineers and empowering a number of of students who utilize the Othermill Pro to learn and make their concepts possible.”

Applestone additionally stated she’ll go on in her position as CEO and is “delighted to get Bre’s help.”
